Review :
A book on how and why to be authentic
This book came out earlier this week, and out of respect for the author i became an owner of one of the first books available for sale.

I have been reading Connie Dieken's newsletters for years. It is one of the few newsletters i receive and read, and the reason is they tend to be concise and informative.

This book follows a similar formula. It is written clearly, and a single readthrough is enough to understand any given sentence or a paragraph.

The book divides the authenticity/fakeness we have into three realms:
Inner Presence
Verbal Presence
Outer Presence

In each of these realms the author defines what balance, and the extremes in each category look like.

For Inner Presence we see what a balanced approach to self looks like (example of a successful manager). Then the extremes Too little (the worrier), and too much (the egoist).

I feel the books on psychology make it or fail based on the validity of...
`The world demands perfection, yet craves authenticity.'
Brava, Connie Dieken! This book is one of the strongest self-help books to be released in a while. Part of the reason for the success is that Dieken addresses leaders - who is one, who can become on, what are the factors that bring about the emergence of the true leader, the magnanimous CEO, the respected and emulated president or director, of quite simply, the most effective person in each of our situations.

Dieken's writing style is not only erudite, but it is also warmly supportive while maintaining the high standards of her recipe for being a top leader. BECOME THE REAL DEAL discusses and details exactly what is necessary to be a genuine leader in our increasingly faux world. She parcels these factors into three categories - or the Three Layers of presence: Inner Presence - a steadiness that doesn't rise or fall in response to people or situations, Verbal Presence - how your words can gain true clout and transform rhetoric into results, and Outer Presence - the specific...
Likeability - an Ah-Ha Moment
Every once in a while, you read something so profound, it becomes an ah-ha moment for you.

I found such a nugget on page 159 of Connie Dieken's book, "Become the Real Deal":

"Let's stop here for a moment - because I believe most people have the notion of likability fundamentally backward. The problem is not that people don't like you. It's that they think you don't like them.

When you radiate warmth, people feel that you understand them and care about their well-being. And this matters because of the psychological principal of reciprocity."

That is just one of my many ah-has from the book that will cause me to treat people I meet differently. What will be yours?
