Review :
Breathtaking
Each issue of this 'magazine' is full of exquisite art, displayed in amazing color. From beginning to end, it is a feast for the eyes. If that were all International Artist contained, it would still be a treasure, but each issue also has numerous demonstrations by some of the finest artists in the world. I have read all of the usual artist magazines - and have subscribed to several - but I haven't seen this quality of art or art technique articles in any of them. It really is astonishing. As I read each issue I wonder if they can possibly maintain the content quality, but each new issue seems to surpass the last. My only regret is that the magazine comes out only six times a year. But it is well worth waiting for. If you are an artist, don't miss this. If you simply enjoy fine artwork, I think you will be equally impressed.
By the way, this publisher also has a line of art instruction books that are some of the finest I have seen. You can find them on Amazon as well as...
My Favorite Magazine
I think that International Artist is the best art magazine on the market. It is always full of beautiful and inspiring paintings and consistently provides articles about a variety of mediums. International Artist also publishes some of the best art instruction books on the market.

A Fantastic Source for Artist
Internanatial Artists magazine is the best magazine on the shelf bar none. I've read many other artist magazines time and time again, but haven't found anything that compares to this jewel. It provides great illustrations as well as wonderful perspectives that are enjoyable as well as inspiring for your reading pleasure. Not only does it inform, it also provides technical and creative details and images in various media for most artist needs in bold beatiful color. This is a truly a winner!

Review :
keeping up with the trends
As an artist, I need to be "in the know" a bit, and ARTnews is one of the 3 magazines I subscribe to for this purpose.
I use it primarily for: # 1, the ads, which are mostly gallery ads, and let me know what is showing, and where. # 2, the exhibit reviews (N.Y., National, International), for the same reason as # 1, and the classifieds, which sometimes give a competition notice not available elsewhere.
Regular departments include: "ARTtalk", which is the lighter side of the news, and "National/International News", which has more of a business slant, obituaries, etc.
Each issue has a "theme". The November 2001 for instance, has fashion design, with 3 articles on art/fashion, and one on Mary McFadden's sculpture collection. It also has "The New Climate", about art after 9/11, from a response by several artists to the loss of a 100 million $ in art.
Also included is a large section on new art books, and the obligatory...
And then there is ARTNews
ARTnews takes its hits from readers: paper is not high quality, the inks smear after a couple of readings, there is a lot of `outsider art' in the ads and a lot of competitions, schools, prizes etc most of which seem to stress entrance fees over artistic interest, and the reporting seems weighted to out of focus art shows. But there must be some reason it is still around, despite the competition. ARTnews is a quick read, lots of things happemn between its coevers, and it seems to be of more interest to working artsts than to the big gun collectors and museums. That is fine: the art world is bizarre enough in its diffuse goals (when there are some evident!), and this journal seems to satisfy the casual magazine collector. The writing by contributing editors is definitely improving and some of the critiques are very eloquent. A good bargain art periodical

Beware Higher Prices on Amazon Site
This magazine, Artforum International and Art in America are all higher on the amazon.com site than on their respective web sites. Super-natural coincidence, or profit-taking?

Beware ArtNews web price, too - in the magazine, they are charging 19.98 for 11 issues, but not on the web.

Art in America creates a fascinating picture of the ever-changing art scene both in the U.S. and abroad.Everything from contemporary to classical… painting, sculpture, photography… critiques of exciting new talentsand important new books.Art in America magazine is one of the best magazines in the world for art lovers. Its focus on all types of artwork and its interviews with leading artists sets this magazine apart from its competitors. Review :
Excellent Up-to-the-Minute Reviews
I have been reading Art in America for the past two years. I intend to subscribe to it forever because it is excellent in its review of gallery and museum exhibitions as well as new books on art. Interviews with "art people"--such as collectors, curators, and artists--are entertaining and generally well written. My only complaint is that it is shoddily copy edited (if copy edited at all); I often find terms misused and/or misspelled. The pictures are glorious.

Subscription is a keeper, not a discard
So many magazines are falling out of print due to lack of readers and increasing ease to read online. Some publications go from my first read to the recycling bin, but not so with ART IN AMERICA. Articles are rather interesting, the pictures are glorious, and I have yet to dispose of a copy. It's a pleasure to read about art, artists, critics, galleries and collectors, all in a concise format. I will admit that I do not read each article, but I scan each issue and find myself returning to a particular article I may have skipped after a memory is triggered. I also enjoy the feel of the paper because it is not so heavy as to weigh down the magazine, but it holds up well to page turning and storage. I recommend this magazine to lovers of art who want to increase their visual literacy.

An Essential Guide
Art in America is an essential guide to art happening anywhere, not just in America; it is scholarly, prosaic and comrehensive. Even if you skip the sometimes overly-serious, jargon-heavy writing, as an image base source it is indispensable, especially if you don't live in New York. I save every issue.

This specific subject delivers surpass out anticipation, this place has chaned into a great replace on personally, The idea arrived properly and also swiftly HOW Magazine [Print + Kindle]

HOW magazine's goal is to help designers, whether they work for a design firm, for an in-house design department or for themselves, run successful, creative, profitable studios. HOW strives to serve the business, technological and creative needs of graphic-design professionals. The magazine provides a practical mix of essential business information, up-to-date technological tips, the creative whys and hows behind noteworthy projects, and profiles of professionals who are influencing design.

Review :
The business of design... not design of design.
This would be a great magazine for someone who either owns thier own design business, a pro freelancer or an art director who is high up on the food chain in an agency. Not very good for an entry-level design student such as myself. This magazine is first and foremost about the business of graphic design: how to promote your business, attract and retain clients, how to deal with a team of designers.

There are very little, if any, how-to's or design theory covered in this magazine. There isnt even much in the way of showing off of good design examples. Only some examples of "best-of" works that you have to really search for, and there isnt much in the way of advanced critiques of said works.

The "Guide To Self-Promotion" special section for subscribers was probably most benificial for me, because there was a nice little section on resume's and interview tips. However, you will find that most of that info can be found for free on the internet anyways.

As...
Money Well Spent
This magazine really fills the voids that design school leaves behind. I have developed some serious guts in fighting for what I am worth due to this publication. When you are a new designer, you get taken advantage of frequently. College did not prepare me to stand up for myself in this competitive market, and this magazine not only keeps you up-to-date with the latest in the design realm, but also serves as a gutsy, motivational read as well. This is a must have subscription for budding designers. What a relief to read a killer design publication from the midwest!

THE Magazine for the Commercial Graphic Artist!
I have been buying copies of this magazine in New York City newsstands for years now. I think the first one I picked up was because it contained listings for graphics compatitions. But, I was an evolving graphic artist in Rochester, NY ... educated in Architecture, and teaching myself the rest of what would become my career - Graphic Design. Pen & Ink, masking, layouts, the evolution of a logo design ... all the techniques and steps laid out in feature articles which focused on the work of an individual or design studio at the top of their game. And in between were the articles on how to negotiate a contract, how to present your ideas to a client .. how to GET clients.
It's full of images ... less talk. We are, afterall, visual artists and know we learn best through what we see.
This is a worthwhile magazine to get. You'll find something useful every issue.

Review :
Best of the watercolor quarterlies
The quarterly magazine "Watercolor Magic" features well-known artists such as George Gibson, Carolyn Lord, Stephen Quiller, and Janet Fish, who share their inspiration and techniques with the readers. There's always something in each issue for both beginning and advanced watercolorists. The magazine is packed with color photographs--even the advertisements are interesting. I only wish it were published more than four times a year.
One of my favorite features is the "Swipe File" where readers share tips and techniques, such as how to apply frisket with a feather, transforming plastic Christmas light separators into brush holders, and constructing a mini-sketch kit.
Here are examples of some of the features, taken from tenth anniversary February, 2003 issue:
"Ten Tales of Passage: Past and Future Perfect" - Ten artists talk about their careers: how they started, where they're going, how to connect with people who might enjoy their art...
Best Watercolor Magazine
I am a watercolor artist and instructor. My friend who is also a watercolorist gave me a subscription to this magazine for my birthday. It is full of useful information, hints, and inspiration. You will love every page of every issue.

Fun!
I have to admit I look forward to this coming in the mail. I am a beginning watercolor artist and I greatly enjoy this magazine. With each issue you get to look into the styles of different artists. They don't just tell you about the artist, they show you tips and give ideas. A more advanced artist would probably get quite a bit more out of this magazine then me. There are even articles about how to sell, and how to market your art. I look forward to using the new techniques!

Wow
I accidentally happened upon the August 2005 issue and couldn't believe the cover was a pastel. I have dabbled in pastel recently and quickly snatched this up. There are lots of beautiful photographs of contemporary works with features on the artists' themselves, some of which have step by step photos of how the work was achieved. The downside is that there are only 6 issues per year. The back of the magazine has an extensive listing of pastel courses/workshops/exhibitions throughout the US and internationally, taught by prominent pastelists.

I'm amending this review. I got a subscription and the delivery was horrible. I often did not get issues unless I emailed the company, or they came very late. It seems as if they're extremely disorganized - I'm not sure what's going on, but I did not continue my subscription. Beware!

Great gift - Pastel Journal subscription
Pastel Journal first issue arrived before Xmas!
What a surprise for my artist friend. She
called right away to thank me. Said it was a great gift since with each issue she learns and is inspired.
Nothing could please me more than to hear the gratitude in her voice.
Thanks Amazon for fast processing!

Some excellent, some poor
I find this is worthy of a subscription to keep up with info, artists names, and some excellent art. I find some issues have artists with horrible compositions, weak or incorrect values, inconsistant light sources, or temperature control in paintings. I am open to abstracts, tight realism, loose impressionism, surrealism, etc but ALL SHOULD have correct design principles and fundamentals. About every 3 issues is a winner with 7/8 of the artists strong but some of the other issues you are lucky to find 1/4 that don't look like they are a novice.
