Review :
Great book, quick read!
Bolman & Deal's Reframing the Path to School Leadership is an interesting read. They use four frames of reference--the political frame, human resource frame, the structural frame, and the symbolic frame--to discuss leadership, both on the classroom and school level.

They use a fictional cast of characters that includes new and veteran teachers, and new and veteran principals. At first I was wary of the fictional narrative, but I found it interesting and it kept me reading. At the end of each chapter, which includes a number of fictional scenarios on familair themes (beginning of the year, discipline, tracking, special education), there is a discussion part that I found very helpful.

I'm a beginning principal, and I found this book informative and enlightening. It's also written for teachers, and I think I would've found the book just as useful if I'd read it when I was still in the classroom.

Practical and Useful for Educators
Lee Bolman is an author, teacher, consultant, and respected speaker on the topics of leadership and organizations. Terrance Deal is an international lecturer and retired professor. Both have co-authored a number of leadership books, including Reframing Organizations: Artistry, Choice, and Leadership. Together, they present valuable information and tools to leaders worldwide.

In the second edition of Reframing the Path to School Leadership, Lee Bolman and Terrance Deal write for teachers and principals alike. The book's main audience might seem to be novice teachers and principals, but the advice they layout is essential for any person working in the field of education regardless of their level of experience. They draw on their joint work as coaches and consultants to leaders across they globe, and they offer key information applicable to scenarios principals and teachers will encounter in their work in education.

The basic premise of Reframing the Path to School...
Great read with a novel approach for new educators!
This is a unique new teacher/principal guide because it isn't written as a how-to text but rather a novel. They use a fictional cast of new and veteran teachers and principals to guide readers through leadership frameworks (the political frame, human resource frame, the structural frame, and the symbolic frame). Leadership is addressed within the classroom and the larger school community. The storytelling is a little flat or predictable at times, so I probably wouldn't recommend it as a fiction book. But the unique presentation for a professional development text is refreshing, allowing me to overlook the occasional forced dialogue or contrived situation.

For veteran teachers and principals, though, I think it may just state what it already known without bringing much new to the table (except the unique storytelling approach instead of a textbook), so I would only rate it 3 stars if you're planning to read it on your own as a more experienced educator. On the other hand,...

Review :
A great resource for new and future teachers
This book contains so many helpful ideas that it ought to be required reading in teacher education courses. One of the biggest problems new teachers have is learning how to deal with parents of all stripes. New teachers ought to have a book like this at home or at school for ready reference.

In my own courses for teachers, I cover information that McEwan describes so effectively in her book. She's been there, done that, and new teachers can benefit from her experiences. It is well written, practical, and to the point with many wonderful examples. A worthwhile investment by any account.

Great resource for principals and teachers
I enjoyed the book thoroughly. The author has a great sense of humor, which makes the book an easy read. I liked how the author pointed out the frustrations parents have with schools and teachers, as well as pointed out the different types of parents teachers and principals have to communicate with. There are tips on how to deal with angry, troubled, afraid, or just plain crazy parents, as well as tips on how to make your school more open to parents. Communication is the key in this book, and the more communication parents have about what is going on, on campus, the better the culture at the school will be. I also liked the back of the book that has a section for staff development. I think the reason many teachers avoid talking to parents is because they don't always know the right way to approach parents. The reason I could not give the book a perfect "5" is because I would of preferred a chapter specifically on examples of the "situations" and the different things that could be...
Wonderful Resource!
This book is fantastic! It breaks the issues down as to why parents are angry, troubled, afraid or just plain crazy, what staff does to cause it, and solutions for each. I would highly recommend this book to all school staff that work with parents on a regular basis!
