Review :
A great resource for new and future teachers
This book contains so many helpful ideas that it ought to be required reading in teacher education courses. One of the biggest problems new teachers have is learning how to deal with parents of all stripes. New teachers ought to have a book like this at home or at school for ready reference.

In my own courses for teachers, I cover information that McEwan describes so effectively in her book. She's been there, done that, and new teachers can benefit from her experiences. It is well written, practical, and to the point with many wonderful examples. A worthwhile investment by any account.

Great resource for principals and teachers
I enjoyed the book thoroughly. The author has a great sense of humor, which makes the book an easy read. I liked how the author pointed out the frustrations parents have with schools and teachers, as well as pointed out the different types of parents teachers and principals have to communicate with. There are tips on how to deal with angry, troubled, afraid, or just plain crazy parents, as well as tips on how to make your school more open to parents. Communication is the key in this book, and the more communication parents have about what is going on, on campus, the better the culture at the school will be. I also liked the back of the book that has a section for staff development. I think the reason many teachers avoid talking to parents is because they don't always know the right way to approach parents. The reason I could not give the book a perfect "5" is because I would of preferred a chapter specifically on examples of the "situations" and the different things that could be...
Wonderful Resource!
This book is fantastic! It breaks the issues down as to why parents are angry, troubled, afraid or just plain crazy, what staff does to cause it, and solutions for each. I would highly recommend this book to all school staff that work with parents on a regular basis!

Review :
Superior to "What to Expect..."
Back when babies were just daydreams, I recieved "What to Expect When You're Expecting" (3rd ed.) from a pregnant friend who had an extra copy. Not knowing any better, I was quite pleased. Once I became pregnant and actually needed a guide, however, that changed. I found the book to be poorly organized, overly conversational and condescending in tone (especially given my plans to be a stay-at-home mom), and generally useless for anything other than instilling fear and paranoia. Most exasperating, though, was the "organization." Symptoms that can arise during varying parts of pregnancy are scattered haphazardly amongst the monthly chapters. This means that the book must be read cover to cover and all material retained in memory if hunting through the index and flipping back and forth between sections doesn't sound appealing.

Enter the "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy." Hallelujah! Not wanting to suffer through another mediocre guide to pregnancy, I looked...
Best pregnancy book ever
When we started trying, I bought a lot of pregnancy books. I am now towards the end of my first trimester and this book has been by far the best book I own on this topic.

This book is extremely well organized, very informative and objective, and covers a wide range of topics from pregnancy to birth to breastfeeding.

It is very easy to find what you are looking for. For each week, it explains what your body is going through, how your baby is growing and what emotional changes you could expect. In each month, there is a summary page that lists the problems you may have in that period and tells you when you should call your doctor. There are very nice drawings that show what your baby looks like and how big it is. (Some pictures are real size, for others the book tells what percentage of the real thing the picture is.)

This book had answers to all my questions so far - and I should say, being a very curious first time mom, I had a lot of questions...
Excellent book
I am in the 9th month of my second pregnancy and I love this book. It is a must have for me. I bought the new addition at the begining of this pregnancy and if I have a 3rd child will probably buy a new addition then as well. There are so many questions that arise during pregnancy that this book helps to answer. It also talks about your babies growth and development week by week. Some people have commented that it just has a lot of negative stuff in it. I do not find this to be true. The book is informative about all kinds of different things related to pregnancy, pre-pregnancy and labor. The author states in the book not to read the chapter on when there is a problem unless there is a problem. This book has comforted me in numerous situations when i was worried something was wrong but after reading up on it I realize it is completely normal. It has also helped me stau on track with when to join a bithing class, when to pack my hospital bags, when to find a pediatrican. This book is...

This unique obcject gives surpass the prospect, this has turned into a great buy for myself personally, The concept arrived securely along with speedily Understanding Applied Behavior Analysis: An Introduction to ABA for Parents, Teachers, and Other Professionals

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is based on the premise that behavior can be influenced by changes in environment and by the reinforcing consequences of that behavior. This introductory guide to ABA demystifies the basic terminology, the underlying principles and commonly-used procedures of ABA using accessible, everyday language. Albert J. Kearney explains the kinds of learning and reinforcement processes that form the basis of ABA programs. Having covered these essential principles, he describes how the science of behavior analysis can be effectively applied to real life behavior problems. He looks at how behavior is assessed and various intervention techniques that are often employed with children who have autism and other special needs. Having laid these essential foundations, Kearney touches on more advanced topics: the applications of ABA in behavioral education, such as precision teaching and programmed instruction. Clear, accessible and with a structure that is easy-to-follow, this book is an essential introduction to the discipline of ABA and its applications for parents and professionals

Review :
Excellent Text for Educators
Kearney's clear, precise introduction to behavior analysis is an essential tool for educators, particularly those working with students with special needs. The book provides a wonderful range of strategies and gives a solid overview of the field of ABA. I'd recommend this book to school psychologists, counselors, social workers, and classroom teachers and certainly to parents. Kearney explains the theory behind ABA in practical, accessible terms and then shares a wealth of examples.

Great for Explaining the Basics
I teach young students who are on the autism spectrum and was looking for a book I could recommend to parents who are being flooded with new information, jargon and ideas. This book has been perfect for that. The parents I have recommended it to really enjoy it and my copy has been conspicious absent for quite sometime. Many of the students I work with have new diagnosis or are new to the school system so giving parents access to the terminology and jargon teachers, doctors, therapists and so many other people are using can really help them to advocate for their children.

I also don't think it would hurt for regular education teachers who may work with students who are on the spectrum to have information about ABA. There's no reason that they should be expected to go into huge amounts of depth, but this kind of information could really empower them. I think it might also help with those pesky classroom management issues with students who do not have IEPs.

I...
Especially good book for novice!
I recommend this book for anyone who knows nothing about applied behavior analysis! It clearly delineates the basic scientific principles upon which the discipline is built. The fact that the treatments and approaches are founded upon past research and not "hunches" about human behavior comes across loud and strong. The terminology is explained in "everyday" language so that any one who is interested does not get bogged down in techncial terms. This problem has plagued those of us who desire others to understand the science.

Review :
disappointed, of no use for inattentive (non-hyper) ADD, very basic
I am really disappointed. This book was supposed to be the "go to" resource for all things ADHD. Unfortunately, it is really focused on hyperactivity and bad behavior. I endured a large part of the book before he notes that inattentive ADHD is not covered by the book, but for a brief blurb where he posits inattentive ADD(nonhyper) is really "sluggish cognitive tempo"-his theory really doesn't fit my child at all.
One pro is that he does provide a very thorough rebuttal to common misconceptions like "ADHD didn't exist before now, doesn't exist in other countries, is caused by diet or tv" etc.
But, it is also not an engaging read, and as another reviewer stated a lot of it is really basic parenting-"make sure to notice your kid being good," "take time for yourself," etc.
I had checked out the Book "Driven to Distraction" before buying this. It was infinitely better, in my opinion. It covered both hyper and nonhyperactive...
Extremely Helpful To Better Understand My Child
I never felt like the diagnosis of ADHD described my child very well. It seems like his problems with every day functioning and social interaction were just to exhausting and extreme. I never knew if I should be strict and firm or show him extra patience and more compassion, but one thing was for sure, nothing seemed to make it better or help me understand him any better-until I read this book. This book really gives you a framework for how to look at your child and better understand why ADHD can be so all-consuming and affect so many areas of you and your child's life. I would highly recommend this book for anyone struggling to understand ADHD better and help their child with ADHD. If you feel like things are so bad that you might be losing your relationship with your child this book WILL help. It's also a great everything you need to know guide even if your experience with ADHD isn't as severe as mine has been.

Still a superior resource for parents and teachers
As a parent I have returned to this resource again and again (previous edition). This updated version is worth the investment. As a teacher I have recommended this book to parents and other teachers who have found it very helpful. Appropriate for anyone interested in what ADHD is and what can be done to support a family coping with it. Although there is a section on medication with up-to-date research, the bulk of this book is about behavioral, organizational, educational and family dynamic support. This includes sections for young children through the teen years. Highly recomended!

Review :
Concise, scientifically rigorous, and part of a coherent series
There are a million of these kinds of books, so it was hard to settle on just one. To narrow the field, I essentially eliminated any books that were just by some random person. Having a wacky personality or a bold new insight into childhood development may be good for spicing up an episode of Dr. Oz, but I prefer a book that has the backing of some kind of medical institution. I was pretty sure that meant a book from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sounds good, right?

My big problem with the AAP books was that there were just too many of them. A book on "taking your baby home." A book on his first month. A book on his first year. A book on his first five years. A book on his third Tuesday through his ninth winter solstice. All very fine books, judging by reviews, but the whole collected seemed a bit too incoherent to me. And did I really need an encyclopedia's worth of literature to get this kid through his first year?

Then there's this book. A measly...
Sensible, scientific and not at all preachy
Most baby books are filled with cutesy emotional stories and thinly veiled judgments, but this one just presents the facts and recognizes that everyone's baby, and everyone's circumstances are different. For a person with a logic-based brain, this is a great resource without all the annoying emotional filler.

Pretty good overall
This is a thorough, nicely-laid-out book that covers all kinds of different aspects of parenting an infant. It's positive about breastfeeding and cloth diapering--I'm amazed at how long it's taken baby book writers to figure out that most cloth diapers use snaps or Velcro fasteners, not pins, and have since the mid-1990's!--and it covers everything from airplane travel to adoption to multiple birth to caring for physical and mental disabilities, as well as normal developmental and medical issues and family relationships. It's really very thorough.

I am overjoyed that it talks about the feelings mothers have about enjoying the intellectual stimulation, adult interaction, and earning ability that comes with a career--something other books (*cough* Sears *cough*) don't even MENTION. So I don't have to beat myself up for liking my job. Oddly, though, I would have appreciated it if it had been a little more positive about the staying-at-home choice. This book talks about how if...
