WARNING TO READERS:

The Author of This Book is Kind of Crazy, Kind of Delusional, and All Kinds of Hilarious

Whether she’s driving a limo for former Family Ties star Justine Bateman, dancing in the dark for a rarely seen Bob Dylan music video, or stalking a bachelor reject from TV’s Love Connection, Stefanie Wilder-Taylor is kind of a big deal—at least in her own mind. Smart, screwy, and scathingly funny, her tell-all essays capture every cringe-worthy moment of her kind-of famous life. From bombing as a stand-up comic for born-again Christians, to winging it as a singing waitress in an Italian restaurant, to posting open letters to Angelina Jolie and David Hasselhoff, this unstoppable L.A. transplant refuses to give up on her dreams—no matter how ill-advised—and shows us a side of Hollywood better kept hidden. When it comes to funny women—unplugged and unleashed—they don’t get any wilder than Stefanie Wilder-Taylor. . . .

Review :
Some kind of funny
I'm Kind of a Big Deal: And Other Delusions of Adequacy is Stefanie Wilder-Taylor's memory of her journey through Hollywood. After initially leaving home for New York, she realizes that California might be a better bet to achieving her dream of being an actress. Amusing anecdotes of the various jobs she has while trying to audition for acting jobs. Even more fun when she realizes that her manager's wife auditions for all the prime jobs! Little does she know that suffering through a dating show cattle call would lead to her promising career in show writing and show running. Finally, she finds something she enjoys doing that she can earn money.

Having never read any of Stefanie Wilder-Taylor's other books, I had no idea what to expect. This book exceeded my expectation. Several parts of the book were chest clutching funny. Her description of her struggle with alcoholism and the details of her relationship with her dad were poignant. The only part I disliked were the...
Wry memoir
Stefanie Wilder-Taylor's name is not familiar to me but I needed a laugh and I hoped this collection of essays would provide one or two given her experience as a stand up comedienne. Wilder-Taylor uses humour and witty asides to document her struggle to become famous, first in stand up, then as an actress until finally discovering her niche as a segment writer.

Predictably Stefanie enjoyed a rather wild adolescence in an unhappy home, and escaped to the bright lights of LA as soon as practicable. Stefanie describes supporting herself with a variety of low paying jobs from office temping to chauffeuring while auditioning for dubious television. Her experiences are fodder for some amusing anecdotes and Stefanie concisely illustrates the weird and wild of working and living in LA. With a padded resume she finally lands on her feet writing for television and I am dying to know if (as was implied without crossing legal boundaries)that really was Angie??
Wilder-Taylor also...
funny stuff
"I'm kind of a big deal" chronicles Stefanie Wilder-Taylor's life, growing up and eventually "making it" in Hollywood as a game shows writer. In similar style to her previous titles, Wilder-Taylor tells her story in separate anecdotes, and finds comedy in every situation she encounters.

Stories include everything from waitressing in New York, participating as an extra in Bob Dylan video, and participating in dating game shows---to stalking a guy she saw on TV, temporarily working as a limo driver to the rich and famous (Chevy Chase was nice, Lolita Davidovich not), trying her hand at becoming a stand-up comedian, and accidentally getting a break and finding employment as a game show writer.

The writing is pretty funny, and the author succeeds in keeping things light. This was a nice sequel to "It's not me, it's you," which I also read. Recommended for anyone who likes light comedy-centered memoirs, or is simply looking to be entertained.

Review :
Not reccomended
My mom bought this workbook for me, along with a few others. Most are wonderful in this series, but I was maybe 15 when my mom bought it for me. It's written a very cheesy, childish prospective. I couldn't deal with the topic at all. It seemed to rely a lot on self esteem which really bugged me. I guess it could help some girls but I wouldn't recommend it at all.

Great Book
Great quick lessons to use for small group and individual counseling groups. These lessons are suitable for middle school girls.

Pass on this one
I think the use of "cool talk" in this book makes it awkward. None of the teens I know talk in this manner so I can't use a book that attempts to be cool, but ends up just sounding lame. I have just about all the books in this series, but this is the first that I haven't been pleased with.

This kind of subject delivers overtake own anticipation, that one has chaned into a fantastic buy for me personally, The idea came properly and swiftly Impossible to Please: How to Deal with Perfectionist Coworkers, Controlling Spouses, and Other Incredibly Critical People

Everyone knows someone who is impossible to please, critical, judgmental, picky, and stubbornly closed-minded. These are symptoms of a disorder called obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD), but it’s common for people to have subclinical levels of some or all of these qualities. Most of the time, it’s best to avoid the difficult to please person, but what happens when he or she is a close family member, coworker, or even a spouse? It’s still possible to maintain a positive relationship with the right tools. Impossible to Please, written by the authors of Toxic Coworkers, is a manual for dealing with these difficult people without sitting through stressful arguments, vicious insults and attacks, and passive-aggressive behavior. It empowers readers to take charge of the relationship and regain their dignity and confidence in interactions with these individuals.

This book features specific strategies that are immediately effective when conversing with critical people and explains how readers can respond to unfair blame without becoming angry or overly defensive. By setting boundaries, improving communication, and asserting themselves, readers learn to deal with the impossible to please in romantic relationships, friendships, family, and work relationships.

Review :
amazingly helpful!
I only wish I could have given this book more stars, it was exceptional.
I am the mate of a controlling spouse who I ALSO work with. This has been the source of significant stress, to say the least. I have been feeling depressed and also very enraged.
This book gave me so many strategies for making my situation at work and at home better. It showed me how to effect change EVEN THOUGH I cannot expect to change my controlling, perfectionistic mate. It gives great, real life scenarios and conversations, ways to communicate poorly, and efficiently, with the perfectionist.
This book is empowering without giving the impression that perfectionists are horrible, toxic people that need to be avoided at all cost. When you love the person, "getting out of a toxic environment" is so unhelpful, and I am so glad that so very much of this book is about boundaries and getting everyone's needs addressed.
Buy this book, you will NOT regret it.

For dealing with EXTREMELY critical people (limited application)
I imagine this book would be helpful if you are dealing with the very specific type of personality they describe in the book. It is not for dealing with GENERALLY critical people, but rather for dealing with EXTREMELY critical people who are truly using criticism as a mean to control.
THe first half of the book (understanding controlling perfectionists) was particularly limited in its use for me, and I imagine for most people, as this is the part where the EXTREME controlling perfectionist is described. I quickly realized that the people I was dealing with were not as controlling as the extent of the people described in this book.

However, the second half of the book (practical strategies) was still of some use. They address setting boundaries and improving communication, and then specific tips for personal life vs work life. Of course so much of the advice is still based on the reader (me, you) not taking things personally when someone is overly critical... which of...
Very helpful
Just learning that controlling perfectionism is a real personality disorder and that I am not alone in dealing with people who suffer from it has been really helpful for me. The authors of this book are so dead-on that you will feel like they have met the controlling perfectionist(s) in your life. The book includes lots of practical advice. Also useful for improving interpersonal skills in general. Highly recommended.

Review :
Pretty awful
This book has some of the worst nutritional advice I've read for pregnant women. She condemns fat/fatty foods, advises pregnant women to eat low fat, vegetarian diets, and continually uses the entirely different substances 'folate' and 'folic acid' interchangeably. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate, which can actually cause the birth defects that adequate intake of folate will prevent. The strangest part is she talks about the gene mutation that some women possess that the folic acid will disagree with and be more likely to cause birth defects, yet she still recommends folic acid. It's very confusing if you don't already know about this gene mutation and the difference btw the 2 forms of this vitamin. The other thing that screamed out to me was that she states that an underweight woman with a BMI of 18.5 and below can gain anywhere from 8-40lbs in pregnancy and it is considered a healthy weight gain, while every other BMI had a more acceptable sounding weight gain. I...
Very informative
Every pregnant woman is looking for answers to their questions, consolation for their fears and the best information possible to help get them through this most miraculous time. Here you will find all you need and more all wrapped up in one book. You will discover what your body is going through. How the baby is growing. Foods to help best nourish you and the baby. Natural alternatives for aches and pains. How to work with your body for a natural birth. How to listen to your body. Exercises you can do during and after pregnancy, and so much more! All is laid out in a simple and easy to understand manner and it comes with trusted expertise!

I think this book is full of useful information for the mom to be. Whether it's a first pregnancy, or a first natural pregnancy, this book will prove to be useful. As someone who has done home births with both my children, I am all for going natural, so I really think this will be a useful book of information to fall back on should I have...
Terrible.
I had high hopes for this book, based on the reviews of previous editions. However, all credibility went out the window when I read the section on miscarriages. The very first bullet point under general recommendations said that if you have a miscarriage you might have to "come to terms with whether in your heart of hearts you really want to be pregnant." Umm, WHAT?!?!? If that isn't the most horrifically damaging thing to say to a woman who has lost a pregnancy, then I don't know what is. It is uneducated, antiquated, and downright ignorant to blame the woman for not "wanting" her pregnancy enough. I couldn't take the rest of the book seriously after reading such crap.

Review :
Best Birthing/Labor book for MOM too!
I've delivered 7 children and am now pregnant with my 8th. WHERE WAS THIS BOOK WHEN I WAS PREGNANT WITH MY 1st?!?!? Everything the book said the mother would feel was RIGHT on!!! The title is deceiving because it says it is for a "Birth Partner". It would definitely be helpful to them, but I got this book for myself and found it even more educating then I expected.
I especially appreciated that it didn't seem to have a hidden agenda or preference. Having had hospital/epidural births and natural births myself, I can see the benefits of both as each birth is different. I never felt there was an anti-home birth or anti-hospital birth sentiment to it. It was information for BOTH of them.
My favorite part was the detailed What-is-Mom-going-to-feel during _______ stage of labor. Then there were suggestions on how to relieve that, etc.
I highly highly recommend this book. I have read many (SCADS!!!) of birthing books and this is my favorite so far.

My wife expected me to be the birth expert
As a first time dad i wanted to be very much the involved father from the first step. I had taken enough birth and baby caring classes to understand the basics for the new baby to baby. My wife and i wanted to do a (as much as possible) natural birth. This means no drugs and no surgery. Yo go girl! What really scared me was that from everyone i talked with, complications occur and you sometimes had to make a quick decision on limited knowledge on the spot.

This is where i think that Penny did a great job of breaking things down. She has a great background in natural births. So many tips for comforting the mother. Birthing is a marathon. After 20 hours watching my wife go through labor, i could still remember some tips to help her cope. It was great for someone needing to know how the last few hours of pregnancy and the first first hours of newborn life can be,

Thanks for making the book read more like a series of personal accounts vs. charts and studies...
Excellent book, terrible e-book
As a new dad with a now 7-month old son, this book helped me prepare for what my wife was going to go through and give me the tools and confidence to help her through everything she went through. I would recommend this book to all new fathers. HOWEVER, do not get the e-book. There are lots of tables and pictures that do not translate well into the smaller e-book format. Also, as a reference, this is much better used as a physical book.

Review :
Five Stars
Great book!! More details and very organized breakdown of strategies. Great resources for Therapists and parents.

Not as helpful as I'd hoped
Not as helpful as I had expected. This was recommended from my daughter's therapist. I was hoping for some more activity ideas. It is a good book with useful information, but i was looking for something that had more specific direction, rather than so many explanations and history.

This unique obcject gives surpass the prospect, this has turned into a great buy for myself personally, The concept arrived securely along with speedily Understanding Applied Behavior Analysis: An Introduction to ABA for Parents, Teachers, and Other Professionals

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is based on the premise that behavior can be influenced by changes in environment and by the reinforcing consequences of that behavior. This introductory guide to ABA demystifies the basic terminology, the underlying principles and commonly-used procedures of ABA using accessible, everyday language. Albert J. Kearney explains the kinds of learning and reinforcement processes that form the basis of ABA programs. Having covered these essential principles, he describes how the science of behavior analysis can be effectively applied to real life behavior problems. He looks at how behavior is assessed and various intervention techniques that are often employed with children who have autism and other special needs. Having laid these essential foundations, Kearney touches on more advanced topics: the applications of ABA in behavioral education, such as precision teaching and programmed instruction. Clear, accessible and with a structure that is easy-to-follow, this book is an essential introduction to the discipline of ABA and its applications for parents and professionals

Review :
Excellent Text for Educators
Kearney's clear, precise introduction to behavior analysis is an essential tool for educators, particularly those working with students with special needs. The book provides a wonderful range of strategies and gives a solid overview of the field of ABA. I'd recommend this book to school psychologists, counselors, social workers, and classroom teachers and certainly to parents. Kearney explains the theory behind ABA in practical, accessible terms and then shares a wealth of examples.

Great for Explaining the Basics
I teach young students who are on the autism spectrum and was looking for a book I could recommend to parents who are being flooded with new information, jargon and ideas. This book has been perfect for that. The parents I have recommended it to really enjoy it and my copy has been conspicious absent for quite sometime. Many of the students I work with have new diagnosis or are new to the school system so giving parents access to the terminology and jargon teachers, doctors, therapists and so many other people are using can really help them to advocate for their children.

I also don't think it would hurt for regular education teachers who may work with students who are on the spectrum to have information about ABA. There's no reason that they should be expected to go into huge amounts of depth, but this kind of information could really empower them. I think it might also help with those pesky classroom management issues with students who do not have IEPs.

I...
Especially good book for novice!
I recommend this book for anyone who knows nothing about applied behavior analysis! It clearly delineates the basic scientific principles upon which the discipline is built. The fact that the treatments and approaches are founded upon past research and not "hunches" about human behavior comes across loud and strong. The terminology is explained in "everyday" language so that any one who is interested does not get bogged down in techncial terms. This problem has plagued those of us who desire others to understand the science.

Review :
Awesome book, but there may be an alternative to laxatives...
Here is a three bullet-point version for the TLDR crew. (TLDR = Too Long, Didn't Read)

1. This book has answers when it comes to the cause of bed wetting. Simple is so genius.

2. For some cases that may even seem to be extreme, enemas and other laxatives may not even be needed. Magnesium supplementation may be enough to fix the situation entirely in a as little as a week. "Most magnesium supplements are junk" might be too strong, but ones like Natural Calm found on Amazon are very effective and (most) kids can at least learn to enjoy them.

3. The book mentions switching to soy milk as an alternative to the constipation-inducing cow's milk. Intolerance is mentioned as a possibility of cow's milk producing bowel problems. While soy may help with constipation problems, it comes with its own set of problems that I would personally consider to be worse than constipation. Get educated on both sides of the argument and make a decision. I think that a...
Excellent book; all parents (and all pediatricians) should read it
[Updated/Revised 3-26-14]: Until recently, first-grade daughter had never been dry at night. For years we were told not to worry about it, and that children eventually grow out of it. But she had reached an age where it was upsetting to her, and recently she had to turn down her first sleepover invitation because she was embarrassed about wearing nighttime pullups.

It may be true that most kids do eventually grow out of bedwetting. But this book makes a compelling argument that, in most cases, there is an underlying cause that (A) can be easily addressed (thus leading to a complete resolution of the problem); and (B) could turn into a much bigger problem if left untreated for too long. If that's the case, then we do a disservice to our children by just "waiting for them to grow out of it." Months and years go by; the child feels embarrassed despite the parent's best efforts to reassure her; and the underlying problem gets worse and and worse. If there's a practical,...
saved my life
I recently ran into Steve Hodges at the medical center where I work as an RN. He was carrying a copy of his book. It caught my attention because I have a 10-year-old that has been a bed wetter her entire life. I stopped him and asked him about it. He explained the concept of the book. I told Steve that I didn't think my child was constipated because she pooped every day. He said that I might be surprised. I had been discussing this bedwetting problem with my child's pediatrician regularly over the years and he assured me that she would grow out of it. He had printed out the UpToDate information sheet on bedwetting that included most of the same information that I had previously read. We had tried bedwetting alarms on and off for years without success. I was ready to explore anything that might help. I got the book and started reading it. It's an easy read with lots of great information about the physiology of the problem and treatment options including medication, dietary...
