Superior to "What to Expect..."
Back when babies were just daydreams, I recieved "What to Expect When You're Expecting" (3rd ed.) from a pregnant friend who had an extra copy. Not knowing any better, I was quite pleased. Once I became pregnant and actually needed a guide, however, that changed. I found the book to be poorly organized, overly conversational and condescending in tone (especially given my plans to be a stay-at-home mom), and generally useless for anything other than instilling fear and paranoia. Most exasperating, though, was the "organization." Symptoms that can arise during varying parts of pregnancy are scattered haphazardly amongst the monthly chapters. This means that the book must be read cover to cover and all material retained in memory if hunting through the index and flipping back and forth between sections doesn't sound appealing.

Enter the "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy." Hallelujah! Not wanting to suffer through another mediocre guide to pregnancy, I looked...
Best pregnancy book ever
When we started trying, I bought a lot of pregnancy books. I am now towards the end of my first trimester and this book has been by far the best book I own on this topic.

This book is extremely well organized, very informative and objective, and covers a wide range of topics from pregnancy to birth to breastfeeding.

It is very easy to find what you are looking for. For each week, it explains what your body is going through, how your baby is growing and what emotional changes you could expect. In each month, there is a summary page that lists the problems you may have in that period and tells you when you should call your doctor. There are very nice drawings that show what your baby looks like and how big it is. (Some pictures are real size, for others the book tells what percentage of the real thing the picture is.)

This book had answers to all my questions so far - and I should say, being a very curious first time mom, I had a lot of questions...
Excellent book
I am in the 9th month of my second pregnancy and I love this book. It is a must have for me. I bought the new addition at the begining of this pregnancy and if I have a 3rd child will probably buy a new addition then as well. There are so many questions that arise during pregnancy that this book helps to answer. It also talks about your babies growth and development week by week. Some people have commented that it just has a lot of negative stuff in it. I do not find this to be true. The book is informative about all kinds of different things related to pregnancy, pre-pregnancy and labor. The author states in the book not to read the chapter on when there is a problem unless there is a problem. This book has comforted me in numerous situations when i was worried something was wrong but after reading up on it I realize it is completely normal. It has also helped me stau on track with when to join a bithing class, when to pack my hospital bags, when to find a pediatrican. This book is...

Review :
Very Intelligently Set Up - One of the Best Cookbooks I've read
I've read/reviewed a lot of diet cookbooks in the past and I have to say, this is about as perfect as it gets. A huge range of recipes, all with tips, substitutions, easy to read ingredients, not too cumbersome directions, and great (but not weird or strange) variations of favorites. Clearly, a lot of work has gone into this - from the color photography (nicely grouped together for quick reviewing to choose something to make) to the remarkable versatility and mutability of the recipes. Count me very impressed.

The book breaks down as follows: a quick introduction then Breakfast; Dips, spreads, salsas, and sauces; Soups; Salads; Veggie full sides; Whole grain sides; Mains; The new comfort food, Snacks, Sweet treats. At over 240 pages, there are a lot of different recipes to explore - with a guarantee they will be healthy.

What I appreciated is a very comprehensive view of everything in the book. As if respecting that most people who need a diet book probably eat...
Other than that this book is great, and I would recommend it to anyone looking ...
I am really enjoying this book, however, I do wish that the portion/serving sizes were included. An example is the recipe for baked falafel...it just says 'makes 30', but how much is a serving??? Other than that this book is great, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for easy, healthy meals. I am currently following the Dr.'s Diet and have lost 29 pounds in 8 weeks, so not too bad!

Cookbook for ALL people who want tasty & healthy food
The Doctor’s Diet Cookbook is written for mainstream America. It’s not gimmicky and it’s not filled with hard-to-find-and-tastes-like-cardboard ingredients. It’s filled with up-to-date and straight forward information on nutrition written in everyday language for Americans. I like it.

This book was written to be a part 2 of The Doctor’s Diet. But, I recommend this cookbook for everyone whether you’ve read that book or not. It’s filled with scrumptious recipes that the whole family will enjoy.

In my opinion, this book has a far reaching audience. You’ll love it if:
you know you need to eat more veggies but don’t like ‘em
you want to learn how to make healthy food choices
you need yummy alternatives to sugar (Read The Doctor’s Diet for easy instructions and motivation to kick the sugar habit)
your lifestyle usually requires fast and easy recipes
you like the idea of eating...

Review :
Concise, scientifically rigorous, and part of a coherent series
There are a million of these kinds of books, so it was hard to settle on just one. To narrow the field, I essentially eliminated any books that were just by some random person. Having a wacky personality or a bold new insight into childhood development may be good for spicing up an episode of Dr. Oz, but I prefer a book that has the backing of some kind of medical institution. I was pretty sure that meant a book from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Sounds good, right?

My big problem with the AAP books was that there were just too many of them. A book on "taking your baby home." A book on his first month. A book on his first year. A book on his first five years. A book on his third Tuesday through his ninth winter solstice. All very fine books, judging by reviews, but the whole collected seemed a bit too incoherent to me. And did I really need an encyclopedia's worth of literature to get this kid through his first year?

Then there's this book. A measly...
Sensible, scientific and not at all preachy
Most baby books are filled with cutesy emotional stories and thinly veiled judgments, but this one just presents the facts and recognizes that everyone's baby, and everyone's circumstances are different. For a person with a logic-based brain, this is a great resource without all the annoying emotional filler.

Pretty good overall
This is a thorough, nicely-laid-out book that covers all kinds of different aspects of parenting an infant. It's positive about breastfeeding and cloth diapering--I'm amazed at how long it's taken baby book writers to figure out that most cloth diapers use snaps or Velcro fasteners, not pins, and have since the mid-1990's!--and it covers everything from airplane travel to adoption to multiple birth to caring for physical and mental disabilities, as well as normal developmental and medical issues and family relationships. It's really very thorough.

I am overjoyed that it talks about the feelings mothers have about enjoying the intellectual stimulation, adult interaction, and earning ability that comes with a career--something other books (*cough* Sears *cough*) don't even MENTION. So I don't have to beat myself up for liking my job. Oddly, though, I would have appreciated it if it had been a little more positive about the staying-at-home choice. This book talks about how if...
