The most acclaimed, comprehensive guide on Pilates is now updated, expanded, and better than ever!

In this second edition, world-renowned Pilates expert Rael Isacowitz shows you the same repertoire that he has used to train multiple Olympians as well as an elite group of professional instructors who work with celebrities and athletes around the world.

Starting with the foundation for all the exercises, Pilates presents an in-depth treatment of mat work, including photos, imagery cues, and detailed instruction on breathing to help you perform the movements correctly. The mat work in this edition is organized according to a mat-specific version of the comprehensive BASI Block System used for the apparatus work. This arrangement enhances understanding of the expansive repertoire and provides the tools for creating personalized mat routines. A unique set of challenging exercise sequences is offered to facilitate performing the movements in one continuous, flowing motion.

After the mat work, where most books stop entirely, Pilates goes on to apply the same depth of instruction and photos to the full range of Pilates apparatus:

• Reformer

• Cadillac

• Wunda chair

• Step and ladder barrels

• Ped-a-pul

• Arm chair

• Magic circle

The complete repertoire includes a purposeful grouping of exercises into blocks that work all regions of the body and progress from the fundamental level through the intermediate and advanced levels to challenge you at all stages of Pilates development.

With more than 200 exercises and more than 50 variations, Pilates is the most comprehensive guide available on the method. As a contemporary approach to the work of Joseph Pilates, this is the one book you need in order to improve your balance, concentration, coordination, posture, muscle tone, core strength, and flexibility—in short, your well-being.

Review :
I work out!
Once upon a time I had done Pilates. It was nothing professional, I saw a few moves in a magazine and did them. Fast forward a month 1/2 and I slipped on a pair of jeans that had been too tight. They fit with ease and I thought to myself this stuff works! And then I became lazy, stopped doing those moves, lost the paper and I don't fit into those jeans anymore. So I was excited to get this book.

The book is an odd shape. Its wide, but it has to be in order to give the reader all the information. When you open the book you will see the progression of moves. This could not be done in a normal sized book. As some have mentioned there are pieces of equipment that the book uses to show different moves. For those who do not have access to gym equipment there is a section for just a mat. Those pages are from 49-118. Prior to that it talks about enhancing the mind and body, alignment, posture and movement powerful Pilates practice I only had a mat so that is what I used...
Love the pictures and the detail, just really wish it was spiral bound.
I love the pictures and the detail in this book -- reading through it after a Pilates class helps me "cement" what I've learned, and makes it easier to practice mat exercises at home, etc. Compared to the several other Pilates books I have acquired over the years, this one goes beyond just the mat exercises, though, and goes through exercises on all the main pieces of equipment. Thus far, every exercise I've ever learned in class has been in this book. The only significant downside for me is that I really, really wish the book was spiral bound. So often I read something and want to try a position, only to have to flop the book upside down or dog-ear a page, then try it, and then open the book back up again to check what I missed. Having a lay flat spiral binding would have added a lot to the book for me -- personally, I would have been willing to pay twice the price for that, as the book just isn't as functional without that. I would have rated this book 4.5 stars, but amazon...
Informative, well written, comprehensive
Largely, I was comparing this with a book I already own, Stott Pilates Comprehensive Matwork. Isacowitz's book is similar, but does have important differences. I find value in each, but if you only want one, I will compare them here. Isacowitz's book covers all the various types of Pilates equipment, while the Stott books come as a series, with separate books for matwork and the different apparatus. The Stott book gives more coverage of matwork than Isacowitz's book, but, of course, if you use equipment, then you would need to buy more of the Stott books (which are rather pricey). I find that the Stott book gives more practical info (do this, very specifically), but offers less explanation of why to do that. However, both books offer each of these things and the difference is not a great one. Still, it can help you select one book over the other.

The Isacowitz book targets specific areas of the body with specific types of Pilates equipment, as well as offering a...
