Review :
What???
Patrician Evans has developed a wonderful and plausible theory as to why certain people are compelled to control others.
All people have four internal functions available to them to use as internal guidance: their ability to think, their emotions, their physical sensations and their intuition.
Controlling people (CPs) have suffered some kind of emotional or physical trauma as children or adults that has caused them, as a defense, to shut down one or more of the first three functions. Oftentimes, the only function they use is their thinking function. This leaves them feeling empty inside. And it's a tough way to live.
For this reason, they are attracted to "four functioning" people. Once they feel secure with another person, they project their idea of a perfect person into the other person. The don't see the person for who she/he really is.
People can tell when they're in the presence of a CP because they will be defined by the CP (for example, "you're not hungry!")...
A New Clarity, Breakthrough in Understanding!
Clarity!
This book is awesome. It offers understanding where no one else does. I truly believe it is new groundbreaking insight into the world of the Controlling Person. I say this with confidence because I, like the reviewer "Alliasus" here, have also read stacks and stacks of psychology and self help books in all-out effort to understand my Controlling Person husband of 18 years.
En route, I gained lots of helpful insight, but, NO insight, at all, as to why he is the way he is. On this basis I can say I don't believe this information existed until Patricia Evans wrote this book. I think this is all-new insight, and counselors and lay people alike really need to read it!
I think when people begin to discover this book there will be no stopping it. Because there are legion of us out here who live in relationships that make no sense. Our partners act awful and senselessly, but yet, we know in our hearts they are not evil at heart, and our hope in humankind says there...
Patricia Evans has done it again
As a psychotherapist in San Francisco, I am delighted to recommend this book to my clients. Evans has a gift for presenting profound insights in a simple and clear manner that everyone can both understand and employ. As in her other two books ("The Verbally Abusive Relationship" and "Verbal Abuse Survivors Speak Out"), she identifies and explains a problem that is right under our noses. Evans helps the reader learn how to break free from someone who is pretending to know how he/she thinks and feels. And, rather than demonizing controllers, she explains with compassion their desparate need to connect and to experience closeness. It is quite possible that at least some people who try to control us are simply unskilled in how to connect in which case this book is a powerful educational tool. And, in helping one escape the backward connecting attempts of controllers, the book guides controllers with deeper psychological problems toward getting the professional help...

There are approximately 3,712 ways for a guy to look stupid during pregnancy - this book's here to help you avoid all(most) of them. And here's your first hint: Focus on what you can be doing for her rather than what's happening to her.

She's pregnant. She knows that. You know that. And her 152 baby books tell her exactly what she can expect. Your job is to learn what you can do between the stick turning blue and the drive to the delivery room to make the next nine months go as smoothly as possible. That's where John Pfeiffer steps in.

Like any good coach, he's been through it. He's dealt with the morning sickness and doctor visits, painting the baby's nursery and packing the overnight bag, choosing a name, hospital, and the color of the car-seat cover. All the while he remained positive and responsive - there with a "You're beautiful" when necessary - but assertive during the decision-making process (he didn't want to wind up with a kid named Percy). And now it's your turn.

She might be having the baby, but you have plenty of responsibilities.

Review :
I *HATED* This Book
This book is awful. Seriously, save yourself the money. Instead, find a drunken frat buddy -- ideally one who is a failed comic. If they're childless, the advice will be on-par with this book. If they have a kid, then you actually might come out ahead. Either way, at least you'll be drunk.

This book makes every stupid cliche joke you can think of. Worst of all, it imparts little-to-no useful information.

Unsatisfied, I looked around for another book, and found "The Expectant Father: Facts, Tips, and Advice for Dads-to-Be." I'm about 1/3 of the way in, but I've already learned more than I did from the entirety of the "Dude!" book.

Seriously, I read the entire thing.

Learn from my pain.

Do not buy this book.

Insulting and idiotic.
A female friend gave this to me as a gift. Her husband had read it and they thought I might like or appreciate the book. If you want to offend a male friend, do like they did.

I'm a "dude" who grew up with two older sisters who practically raised me. Father was a social worker who cleaned the house and cooked better than my mother. (To give just two examples.) Did my friend actually think I'd appreciate a book written from (to borrow another reviewer's comment) a frat boy perspective?

No, I did not read the entire book. I'd have no hair left if I had because it would be all pulled out. Every single page I turned to was full of idiotic nonsensical attempts at bad humor combined with a tiny scrap of somewhat useful info. For example, on one page the author comments that guys are clueless about how to hold a baby because we, the testosterone bloated beasts that we are, don't know how to be gentle with our hands unless we're touching breasts. Give me a random...
An easy read but lacks depth
(Review from wife) This book had me laughing out loud at many points but after finishing the book I felt my husband would have a very cursory knowledge of what I was going through and what I would expect of him at the birth.

Summary: Wife will be "DEFCON 1 CRAZY", sex will not happen for over a year, you will never sleep, wife will spend all your money on "a whole new wardrobe". Basically, everything is not going to be fun but the reward is great.

A couple of times the author refuses to describe what an episiotomy *actually* is. Pg 93 "When you learn what that one is, you'll start to believe Eve did screw up and God did punish accordingly." and in the section Is It Sexy Time Yet? he says "Did she have to suffer through an episiotomy? (If you don't know what it is, dude. Pay more attention.)" However he NEVER tells the husband what it is! It's a very common procedure and requires special care, why wouldn't you just describe the procedure and how to care for your...

Review :
The Most Comprehensive Yoga for Children Book Yet
As a yoga teacher for over a decade, an educator and parent I can honestly say this is one of the most comprehensive yoga books out there for bringing the many fold practices and facets of yoga to the young. I can clear a few books of the shelf and replace it with this one. The author's experiences and credentials definitely shine through in this well thought out and written book. Must have, great present for the parent or educator in your life.

Every family should have this book!
Even if you know nothing about yoga, this book will guide you and your children (and grandchildren too) on how to bring yoga into your lives and Lisa makes it fun too! As a yoga teacher for adults I highly recommend the book, for ALL ages!

An Essential Kids Yoga Resource
I have fallen in love with the book, Yoga for Children, by Lisa Flynn. Here's why:

1. Good introductory info

The beginning of the book outlines what yoga is and the benefits of yoga for kids. It also has developmentally appropriate activities based on age range and a list of props and toys for yoga. It provides a good foundation before moving into actually doing yoga with kids. Invaluable for a new kids yoga teacher, or a parent that wants to do yoga with their kids.

2. Doesn't water down yoga for kids

Includes core principles of yoga and how to teach them to children using yoga, storybooks, and discussion points. Not all children's yoga resources do this!

3. Wonderful mindfulness and meditation ideas to do with kids.

Contains many original mindfulness ideas that I've never thought of or seen elsewhere. Mindfulness is such an important aspect of yoga, and it's nice to see this section in the front of the book before...
