This type of obcject gives surpasses out anticipation, this one has become a fantastic upgrade on personally, The thought came properly and quickly The American State from the Civil War to the New Deal: The Twilight of Constitutionalism and the Triumph of Progressivism

This book tells the story of constitutional government in America during the period of the "social question." After the Civil War and Reconstruction, and before the "second Reconstruction" and cultural revolution of the 1960s, Americans dealt with the challenges of the urban and industrial revolutions. In the crises of the American Revolution and the Civil War, the American founders - and then Lincoln and the Republicans - returned to a long tradition of Anglo-American constitutional principles. During the Industrial Revolution, American political thinkers and political actors gradually abandoned those principles for a set of modern ideas, initially called progressivism. The social crisis, culminating in the Great Depression, did not produce a Lincoln to return to the founders' principles, but rather a series of leaders - Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt - who repudiated them. Congress and the Supreme Court eventually followed their lead. Since the New Deal, Americans have lived in a constitutional twilight, not having completely abandoned the natural-rights constitutionalism of the founders, nor having completely embraced the entitlement-based welfare state of modern liberalism.

This unique item gives surpass out prospect, this place has chaned into a great replace on myself personally, The concept arrived correctly as well as quickly Political Realism: How Hacks, Machines, Big Money, and Back-Room Deals Can Strengthen American Democracy

Why did politics once work? And why don't they work today? Despite decades of reform, government is more dysfunctional than ever, the country is more polarized, and special interests have more power to veto reform. What if idealistic reform itself is a culprit?

In Political Realism, Jonathan Rauch argues that well-meaning efforts to stem corruption and increase participation have stripped political leaders and organizations of the tools they need to forge compromises and make them stick. Fortunately, he argues, much of the damage can be undone by rediscovering political realism. Instead of trying to drive private money away out of politics, how about channeling it to strengthen parties and leaders? Instead of doubling down on direct democracy, how about giving political professionals more influence over candidate nominations? Rauch shows how a new generation of realist thinkers is using time-tested truths about politics and government to build reforms for our time.

Rich with contrarian insights and fresh thinking, Political Realism is an eye-opening challenge to today's conventional wisdom about what ails American government and politics.

Review :
Interesting but will face stiff resistance from self righteous good government types.
Any political professional will nod their head in agreement as they read. Idealism is always the most potent enemy of pragmatism but pragmatism must ultimately prevail for government to succeed. Rauch does an outstanding job of detailing the unintended, but predicted, consequences of the long series of political "reforms" pursued over the past century. The only meaningful point he leaves out is that most of these reforms were in fact efforts to compel government to enact and implement a progressive policy agenda on the assumption that it must be what the people would want and support if only the politicians and special interests would get out of the way. As each reform fell short of producing the desired results (largely because the people were disinterested in or opposed to the progressive agenda) more and more "reforms" have been added. This ongoing process has eroded the functionality of government to the point it can no longer deliver either the always unrealistic...
Sure, read it, but don't be taken in. It's free and worth every penny.
The major position of the author is that achieving any goal in politics is made more difficult by the necessity for legitimacy, transparency, or accountability. Therefore efficient politics depends on deceit, secrecy, and immunity. The goal is power and the continuation of power among the group, and any reference to the good of the citizenry in general is irrelevant. This is as true of politics as of venial corporations, oligarchical governments, and criminal syndicates.

The current controversy over fast-tracking trade agreements demonstrates the point. Of course it is much easier for the executive to get the results he wants if he can work in secret and deny input and agreement to most of the groups and people who will be affected. It is the insiders, not the outsiders, who will get their way. Which, of course, is the main motive for "political realism."

And Jonathan Rauch is completely in favor of this. He thinks it's great.

I think...
Must-read.
Rauch brings into focus a developing school of thought that is questioning the efficacy of modern political reforms, including election changes such as primaries, ever-evolving campaign finance regimes, and legislative procedures such as earmarking. Rauch not only brings together these threads, but bravely adds his name to the list of those questioning not only so-called reforms, but the assumptions that underlie them (one sure to infuriate many: maximizing political participation by average Americans is not actually worthwhile).

Lots to digest in this short read, which certainly won't happen mere hours after I've finished it, but I can say this confidently: this book needs to be read widely in our political and academic communities and seriously considered. I'm glad the man who brought us "Kindly Inquisitors" years back put his mind to our modern political processes and argues just as fearlessly.

This kind of obcject delivers surpasses own anticipation, that one has chaned into a great replace on myself, The thought appeared securely and also speedily Raw Deal: How the "Uber Economy" and Runaway Capitalism Are Screwing American Workers

"What's going to happen to my job?"

That's what an increasing number of anxious Americans are asking themselves.

The US workforce, which has been one of the most productive and wealthiest in the world, is undergoing an alarming transformation. Increasing numbers of workers find themselves on shaky ground, turned into freelancers, temps and contractors. Even many full-time and professional jobs are experiencing this precarious shift. Within a decade, a near-majority of the 145 million employed Americans will be impacted. Add to that the steamroller of automation, robots and artificial intelligence already replacing millions of workers and projected to "obsolesce" millions more, and the jobs picture starts looking grim.

Now a weird yet historic mash-up of Silicon Valley technology and Wall Street greed is thrusting upon us the latest economic fraud: the so-called "sharing economy," with companies like Uber, Airbnb and TaskRabbit allegedly "liberating workers" to become "independent" and "their own CEOs," hiring themselves out for ever-smaller jobs and wages while the companies profit.

But this "share the crumbs" economy is just the tip of a looming iceberg that the middle class is drifting toward. Raw Deal: How the "Uber Economy" and Runaway Capitalism Are Screwing American Workers,by veteran journalist Steven Hill, is an exposé that challenges conventional thinking, and the hype celebrating this new economy, by showing why the vision of the "techno sapien" leaders and their Ayn Rand libertarianism is a dead end.

In Raw Deal, Steven Hill proposes pragmatic policy solutions to transform the US economy and its safety net and social contract, launching a new kind of deal to restore power back into the hands of American workers.

Review :
The 'New Deal' is a 'Raw Deal' for Workers
Having worked as a cross-country truck driver for the last decade or so, I've observed several trends adverse to the 'little guy' (drivers). One exception is that a number of companies are switching from paying on a 1099 (driver is an 'independent contractor,' responsible for paying self-employment taxes, and receiving no benefits - overtime, disability, paid sick, holiday or vacation leave, retirement, unemployment insurance) to a W-2 basis, so at least the driver isn't hit so hard by the self-employment tax; some are even providing a semblance of benefits (vacation, subsidized health care). On the other hand, there has been an increase in 'owner-operators,' who by virtue of owning/leasing their own truck become responsible for maintenance (an encouragement to take better care of the truck, and improve fuel economy), as well as keeping the truck moving so as to cover lease/purchase requirements. Another problem for most drivers - they're paid by the mile, regardless of road...
Terrific analysis of the "sharing" economy
Terrific analysis of the "sharing" economy. Author identifies that only the few are benefiting from this sharing -- and it is not those who do the work. Has sound suggestions for making it right.

A Critique of the Gig Economy Misses the Mark
As Bill Steigerwald wrote in the April edition of Reason magazine, I've worked for Travis Kalanick for more than a year, but I've never met him. Technically, he's not my boss and I'm not his employee. I'm one of North America's 400,000 independent "1099" contractors with Uber, the company Kalanick co-founded and runs. In 2015, working in Pittsburgh three or four nights a week, I made nearly 2,200 Uber trips, carried more than 4,500 passengers, and put about 20,000 scratch-free Uber miles on my wife's 2013 Honda CRV. Subtracting expenses for gas and wear and tear on Pittsburgh's infamously pot-holed roads, I netted about $15,000 for the year.

This is the best part-time job I've had in a career of them. I have no bosses, I have no schedule, and I work when, where, and how long I choose. It's the perfect gig for an ex-newspaperman who's writing a book and whose income streams also include Social Security, a pension, and freelance writing. Every time I go to work, I...

This type of item provides surpass own prospect, this place has turned into a amazing replace on myself, The theory arrived properly along with speedily A Disease Called Childhood: Why ADHD Became an American Epidemic

A surprising new look at the rise of ADHD in America, arguing for a better paradigm for diagnosing and treating our children

In 1987, only 3 percent of American children were diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, also known as ADHD. By 2000, that number jumped to 7 percent, and in 2014 the number rose to an alarming 11 percent. To combat the disorder, two thirds of these children, some as young as three years old, are prescribed powerful stimulant drugs like Ritalin and Adderall to help them cope with symptoms. Meanwhile, ADHD rates have remained relatively low in other countries such as France, Finland, and the United Kingdom, and Japan, where the number of children diagnosed with and medicated for ADHD is a measly 1 percent or less.

Alarmed by this trend, family therapist Marilyn Wedge set out to understand how ADHD became an American epidemic. If ADHD were a true biological disorder of the brain, why was the rate of diagnosis so much higher in America than it was abroad? Was a child's inattention or hyperactivity indicative of a genetic defect, or was it merely the expression of normal behavior or a reaction to stress? Most important, were there alternative treatments that could help children thrive without resorting to powerful prescription drugs? In an effort to answer these questions, Wedge published an article in Psychology Today entitled "Why French Kids Don't Have ADHD" in which she argued that different approaches to therapy, parenting, diet, and education may explain why rates of ADHD are so much lower in other countries.

In A Disease Called Childhood, Wedge examines how myriad factors have come together, resulting in a generation addictied to stimulant drugs, and a medical system that encourages diagnosis instead of seeking other solutions. Writing with empathy and dogged determination to help parents and children struggling with an ADHD diagnosis, Wedge draws on her decades of experience, as well as up-to-date research, to offer a new perspective on ADHD. Instead of focusing only on treating symptoms, she looks at the various potential causes of hyperactivity and inattention in children and examines behavioral and environmental, as opposed to strictly biological, treatments that have been proven to help. In the process, Wedge offers parents, teachers, doctors, and therapists a new paradigm for child mental health--and a better, happier, and less medicated future for American children

Review :
A MUST-READ FOR ANY PARENT OR EDUCATOR
I am a Learning Specialist at a New England Prep School -- Vermont Academy. I am also a Freestyle Skiing coach. I have been working with high-energy "attention deficient" teens for 13 years. Doctor Wedge's book "A Disease Called Childhood" validates all of my beliefs and gut instincts about our society's lack of patience with the natural maturing process of adolescents -- particularly males, the overprescription and dangers of amphetamine meds, and the precarious nature and overuse of the ADHD diagnosis in the first place.

Her book is a compelling and refreshing read with strong credibility.

Dr. Wedge and her book is an important voice that needs to be amplified through more readers asking more questions.

Aptly titled book!
A must-read for any parent with a child displaying so-called ADHD symptoms. Dr. Wedge cogently argues that these symptoms are not caused by a biological disorder (except in the case of brain damage) but are a child's response to stress in his/her life from such events as divorce or illness of a parent. As such, the child is best served by therapy addressing the stress and not by medication. This book is aptly titled and highly readable.

An excellent history of psychiatry's shift to a biological/medical focus...and the astounding effects of this change
Many of the negative reviewers are disagreeing with Dr. Wedge's statements in the book, but are not even discussing the facts she presents. Her discussion of American psychiatry's move from a psychoanalytic model of diagnosis and treatment to a biological model was enlightening. I am a pediatric occupational therapist and have worked with children diagnosed with ADHD for 15 years. I strongly believe that the environment in most American schools requires behavioral expectations for children that are developmentally inappropriate. (For example, children in preschool being expected to sit for 30 minutes for a circle time in class, or being expected to write their name before kindergarten, or kindergarteners being expected to write sentences...NONE of this is age-appropriate.) Wedge's book should be read for the information it gives into the history of why ADHD is being over-diagnosed at such alarming rates. We need to consider our cultural biases in America and truly look at making...

  • 6th Edition

Review :
Rest assured, this is the latest printing
I just want to put to rest some of the previous concerns about this being an outdated issue. I'm a doctoral student, so having the latest version of this manual is paramount to the success of my program. That being said, I researched whether or not I should purchase this manual from Amazon, and almost didn't given some of the past negative reviews. I went with my instincts, however, trusting that a major retailer like Amazon would always offer the latest printing of a given text.

Needless to say, I was right in doing so.

I ordered this book February 27, 2012, and according to the inside of my copy, this is the fifth printing (January 2011) of this book. Rest assured that if you order from Amazon, you're getting the latest copy of a terrific resource and at the best price available.

Book: five stars...a terrific resource for anyone writing in the APA style.
Amazon experience: five stars...don't worry guys, you're getting the most recent...
Greatly Disappointed
I was very irritated to find that many errors existed in the 6th edition. I also contacted APA regarding the errors. They are not going to exchange the book for a corrected edition. They made several lame excuses for the errors and for not replacing it. My second email to APA pointedly expressed my displeasure with their stance - copied below...

To have grammar and writing errors in a book about grammar and writing is shameful. How much does your organization really care about the reputation it is presenting? Do you have editors reviewing your works before publication? Are your editors paying attention to their work? If you cannot hold yourself to the standards you have set out in your own publication, then your publications should not exist!

If you need this book, demand a corrected reprinting! If you are a university, you also demand a corrected reprint. This organization should not set standards they are not going to comply with. I give them an "F"...
BEWARE! Many pages of corrections have been issued!
I just received my copy. As a psychology professor, this text is required for my bookshelf--the same is true for students in this field. However, I was upset to learn that APA has already issued 7 typewritten pages of corrections to this manual, and they will not exchange the first printing for a newer print. This is a resource that you will use for years! Wait to purchase until the kinks have been ironed out and they are on a second or third printing of the manual! I am also disappointed that they do not clearly delineate the changes from the 5th edition. It looks to me that there are few important changes (2 spaces between sentences, etc.). Save your money for at least a few more months!
