Outstanding resource for kids on the autism spectrum
As a clinical psychologist working primarily with children on the autism spectrum, I have found this book to be incredibly helpful for my patients and their families. The book is filled with exercises and activities that are easy to put into practice for not only clinicians, but also parents and teachers. The activities are tailored specifically for children on the autism spectrum - meaning they feature simplified language, lots of pictures and hands-on exercises, easy-to-teach "scripts" (my favorite is the "Plan A versus Plan B"), and many activities that are actually quite engaging and fun for the kids. It's not one of those books that drones on and on about theory - this is all about practical ways to help kids who have problems with flexibility. Overall, a wonderful resource that I keep coming back to- highly recommend!

A must have manual for those who work with children with High Functioning ASD
This is a well-written and well-organized workbook directed to teachers, but very applicable to therapists who are looking to teach and support executive skills to (~8-11 year-old) children. Although the primary focus is for high functioning autism spectrum disorders, it is also very helpful for children with ADHD, Anxiety-related disorders and other neuropsychological difficulties. As noted on the title, the primary focus is flexibility and organization/planning skills. It is not intended for children with intellectual disabilities or children with significant language disorders.

This practical book contains a state-of-the-art curriculum developed by experts in the field, including special ed teachers, psychologists, neuropsychologists, therapists and parents of children with high-functioning ASDs. It integrates the scientific knowledge of how executive dysfunction and social learning disorders overlaps to cause behavioral and learning challenges. A nice aspect is that...
The most helpful book I've ever bought!
This book has helped me on so many levels help my son who has autism. I can take him shopping or take him to school; have him try new foods at a restaurant and even have him do something totally off his schedule and not have the meltdown explosive behaviors that he use to have. One of the things that this book teaches is that if I want him to be more flexible then I have to model what that looks like for him. I've learned to help him realize that when he is stuck that there are coping strategies that he can use. My son is so much more relaxed and I am so proud of how he is able to breathe and calm himself down rather quickly.

I recommend this book to anyone who has a child in need of being more flexible and goal directed!!

Review :
Excellent resource for parents of teens with ADHD or ADD
As a clinical psychologist I regard this as one of the best resources for parents of teens. This helps parents to look at the teen with ADHD as having some executive skills impairments that need remediation and understanding. Parents also rate their own executive skills and can try to be a better fit in parenting these adolescents. There are many constructive suggestions in this book and I highly recommend it.

Great Book! Excellent insight into the struggles your teen may be facing.
Smart but Scattered Teens is a must for any proud parent of a teen coping with a learning disability. Unlike many similar books, it presents information and suggestions in a real-life, applicable manner. The authors present the material in an organized, readable, fashion, where a parent (or even a teen, for that matter) could read the book from cover to cover, or select individual sections most applicable to their situation.

The book also contains several hypothetical situations that many teens may find themselves in (think of speeding in a car). It then contains some interesting reactions, both from professionals and from real life teens, on how to respond, learn, and grow based on from such experiences.

Ultimately, if your teen could use a little, or a lot, of help developing the executive skills necessary to succeed in life, this book is for you.

A+

Excellent look at the unusual child
I have a kid who's gifted & in gifted classes. Understands high level concepts, but can't figure out how to organize his locker or manage to turn in his homework - even though he's completed it. It's been bandied about maybe he has autism or ADD, but those didn't fit. This book describes him to a T. Not having the frontal lobe of his brain maturing at the same rate as his peers is a simple, logical explanation & the ensuing ways to deal are enlightening & helpful. This book was a god-send. It was suggested by his gifted teacher after she spent time with him.

Great for Parents
I noticed that a lot of reviews were written by special ed teachers and psychologists, and wanted to add mine as a parent. This book FINALLY shed light on the challenges my son faces at home and school. It not only gave me concrete tools and ideas to help him strengthen his executive skills, but also an understanding of what was going on, which led to more patience on my part. Nagging him to get organized and constantly reminding him to stay on task was not helping. His executive skill weaknesses were beginning to lead to low self-esteem and a "better not to try than to fail" attitude. This book has helped me to begin turning that around. It was recommended to me by a psychologist. If anyone has ever hinted that your child might be ADHD-- read this book before accepting any labels.

Facing my own weaknesses in helping my children
Another parent here. I have three highly gifted kids who nevertheless seem unable to accomplish simple tasks. A friend recommended this book, and it's forcing me to endure a complete paradigm shift, not only about my expectations for them, but of my own weaknesses in this area. Sure, I've had trouble staying organized, I start tasks only to leave them half-completed, and I feel like I have far more potential than I produce. But until I took the inventory for parents in this book, I didn't realize how truly weak my own executive skills are all around (unless I'm inspired, and then I'm a machine! ... just like my daughter). My husband took the quiz and -- not surprisingly -- his EF (executive function) skills are nearly off the charts on the other end. He laughed a little as he said he wondered how honest I was going to be, but he agreed with my self-assessment. Suddenly, I understand why a disastrous house sends me into tears, but he can get to work and make it spotless in a couple...
