First, the bad news: your teenage years are some of the most stressful of your life. Up to 70 percent of teens say they're stressed out, and with pressure about grades at school, parents who just don't seem to get it, and friends who drive you crazy, it's no wonder. Here's the good news! If you learn a few strategies for getting stress under control now, you'll have the skills you need to deal with problems and difficult feelings that life sends your way in high school and beyond.

The Stress Reduction Workbook for Teens is a collection of thirty-seven simple workbook activities that will teach you to reduce your worries using a technique called mindfulness. Mindfulness is a way to be aware of your thoughts and feelings in the present moment. You can use mindfulness when you start to feel as though things are spinning out of control, so you can stop worrying about what might happen and focus instead on what's happening now. Ready to get started? Open this workbook and try out the first activity. Soon, you'll be well on your way to developing resilience and a new kind of strength.

If you’re like many people, you find it easy to look at your negative qualities or feel there is no way to fix your problems or stress. This book is about building on the resources, skills, and positive qualities that you might not even realize you have. It is a way to move from “I'm powerless” thinking to “I can do it!” thinking.

Hundreds of teens in mindfulness-based stress reduction classes have used activities like the ones in this book, and here is what some of them have said:

"I have learned to let things go and move on from bad experiences."

"I felt that the coping skills learned are easy enough and effective enough to be used when I need. I now feel at the very least that I have the ability to reduce my stress."

"I learned new and different ways to stay relaxed and how to deal with stress and now I don’t worry much."

If they can do it, so can you!

Review :
Professor endorses book
I am a professor at University of California, Davis. For the last 10 years I have been impressed with the Stress Reduction training using Mindfulness. First developed my Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at University of Massachusetts, the training has proven effective at reducing the stress levels of thousands of people around the world. Many health plans now have added a Stress Reduction course because of its proven effects at enhancing health and well-being. Now Gina Biegel has tailored this training to fit the massive stresses that teenagers face today. The book has come out of her own work with teens, and is backed up by her research in scientific journals. I highly recommend this book to every teenager and parent. I wish I had read it when I was a teen!

Stress Reduction Workbook for Everyone
This is a really great workbook for everyone, and especially teens because the language, activities and insights feel open and real. As a teacher, I can imagine my students benefiting deeply from these stress reduction techniques, and from the self-reflection opportunities. Truly it reaches across age groups, I'm finding it a very helpful practice for myself. Highly recommended.

Excellent Mindfulness Resource
As a mindfulness-based psychotherapist working with adolescents and their families, I find this workbook to be an invaluable tool for teaching mindfulness to my clients. This workbook is useful in conjunction with a structured MBSR class, and can also be used alone. It encourages healthy dialogue and self-reflection and I recommend it highly for anyone working with the adolescent population.

Do you often find yourself in trouble because of anger? Do you react to situations and later regret how you behaved? Does your anger cause problems with other people? Are you tired of letting anger control you?

Between family life, friends, and the pressures of school, there's no doubt that it's stressful being a teenager. And while anger is a natural human emotion, different people handle it differently. Some hold in their anger and let it build, some lash out with hurtful words, some resort to fighting, and some just explode. If you've noticed yourself beginning to take out your frustrations on the people you love most—your parents, brothers or sisters, and friends—it may be time to make a change.

The Anger Workbook for Teens includes thirty-seven exercises designed to show you effective skills to help you deal with feelings of rage without losing it. By completing just one ten-minute worksheet a day, you'll find out what's triggering your anger, look at the ways you react, and learn skills and techniques for getting your anger under control. You'll develop a personal anger profile and learn to notice the physical symptoms you feel when you become enraged, then find out how to calm those feelings and respond more sensitively to others. Once you fully understand your anger, you'll be better prepared to deal with your feelings in the moment and never lose your cool.

The activities in this workbook will help you notice things that make you angry, handle frustrating situations without getting angry, and effectively communicate your feelings. Most of all, these activities can help you learn to change how you respond to anger. Change is not easy, but with the right frame of mind and set of skills, you can do it. This book is designed to help you understand how both your mind and body respond to anger, how you can handle this anger constructively, and relaxation techniques for dealing with anger in a healthy way, so that you can not only control your anger, but your life as a whole.

Maybe pre-teens.
I am a mental health counselor working with adolescents aged 13-18. After looking through these books (anger and anxiety by the same author), I don't think it's fair to market this to teens. My clients were offended by the youthfulness of the exercises and would not even humor me to engage in the worksheets. As a clinician I can look at the workbooks and see that they do have good stuff in them that is worth discussion, but the actual worksheets/workbook are more appropriate for pre-teens 10-12ish. Just my opinion though, it's possible it's just my particular population/region.

excellent resource for anger management issues!
In my work as a public high school counselor, I have found this timely workbook on Anger Management for Teens to be enormously helpful. The 'anger questionnaire' and guidelines on 'scheduling times' to work on particular aspects of anger have been particularly useful. I have already recommended this workbook to several colleagues and family members. If you or someone you know struggles with teen anger (or even adult anger), this workbook can definitely help you out.

Great Workbook For Angry Teens
I highly recommend this resource! The exercises in this workbook promote self-reflection as well as help teens develop better communication skills. As a licensed school counselor and professional counselor, I've reached for this workbook time and time again. Furthermore, as a supervisor I've recommended this workbook to my supervisees as a "must have" for their library. Great workbook! One of the best!

Building on Kari Dunn Buron s popular The Incredible 5-Point Scale, this book takes a narrower look at challenging behavior with a particular focus on behaviors that can spell trouble for adolescents and young adults who have difficulty understanding and maintaining social boundaries. Using a direct and simple style with lots of examples and hands-on activities, A 5 Is Against the Law! speaks directly to adolescents and young adults. A section of the book is devoted to how to cope with anxiety before it begins to escalate, often leading to impulsive and unacceptable behavior. Throughout the book, the reader is encouraged to think about and create his own behavior on an anxiety scale that applies to his particular emotions and situations.

Review :
It impressed my skeptical teen
My 15 year old is very resistant to books about his Aspergers but he liked this one. He clearly found it helpful, disappearing into his room, reading it completely and then asking me to order some of the items in the bibliography (another first). So kudos to the author.

This book is a "must have" for parents and teachers!
This book is one of the best resources for teens with ASD. The author presents real life social scenarios and uses a simple behavioral approach to helping teens understand how to make an appropriate response. It is effective as an instructional tool (and therefore preventive) or as a strategic process to remediate negative social interactions. I highly recommend this book!

Very useful!
This book is so useful for people with autism spectrum disorders that I wonder why there were no books that are this useful until very recently. As someone with Asperger's Syndrome myself, I realize how much sooner I would have learned good social skills and appropriate behaviour if there had been books like this 30 years ago! For much too long, I was a very marginalized member of society, and this was because nobody gave me the help that I needed in order to know what behaviour is appropriate in what situation. Instead, people just kept me out of situations in which my inappropriate behaviour mattered.

It has been well documented in adults that taking time out for a little R&R or short meditation break can reduce stress and increase productivity. Well, it is no different for kids! And with the over stimulated lifestyles they lead today, it could be just what the doctor ordered. Breathe, Chill– A Handy Book of Games and Techniques Introducing Breathing, Meditation and Relaxation to Kids and Teens is a valuable and practical resource for those who work with or have children in their lives. Like disguising broccoli in chocolate sauce, Breathe, Chill presents 70 engaging breathing, meditation and relaxation activities adapted for children of all ages. Some exercises offer an outlet for tension or stress, while others stealthily teach deep breathing skills, present moment awareness and relaxation… But, sshh, don’t tell them it’s good for them! Organized simply into three sections – Breath Play, Breathing Techniques, and Relaxation and Meditation Techniques – and presented in a fun yet factual, kid-friendly language, each exercise is broken down in the same simple format: What is it? How does it help me? How do I do it? Adapted from traditional meditation and yoga techniques, ancient wisdom is served up in a way that is fun and accessible to all. Written by Lisa Roberts, a registered yoga teacher (RYT), registered children’s yoga teacher (RCYT), and certified children’s yoga therapist, Breathe Chill is a compilation of simple instructional handouts the author created for the pediatric patients she works with at a major children’s hospital.

Review :
Finally, the book I've been looking for!
What a terrific book "Breathe, Chill" is and how lucky we are that Lisa Roberts gave us the gift of writing it. As a grandmother of young children living in a way too busy northeastern city, my daughter had asked me last year to find some calming, yoga-type exercises she could offer to her children. Although other books are out there, I searched and searched but came across nothing that really seemed quite right. And then I finally found "Breathe, Chill".
Roberts has written a book that not only is complete (and I mean complete!), but it is easy to read, accessible to everyone, and fun. She has included the philosophy behind each exercise, detailed explanations of what to do, a list of everything needed, cute drawings, and helpful tips. The book covers healthy posture tips, breathing, meditation, and relaxing techniques--in short, just what all kids (and adults) need to experience calmer, more focused, and healthier lives.
I was thrilled to find this book to give to my...
Fantastic and so simple to follow and share these exercises with kids or any one you know who could benefit learning to chill
Loved the three sections of the book, anyone that has or works with children could use it straight away with simple explanations of fun breath games to share with little ones , breathing techniques for older kids and then relaxation and meditation techniques for kids that understand how we can use the breath to calm and relax our mind body and spirit ...I will be sharing this book with my friends with kids, friends in nursing , education and health care work and my yoga teachers . Can't wait to use the body scan and 61 point meditation myself .

An excellent resource for anyone who has or works with kids.
This book is a compilation of games and techniques to share with kids of all ages, helping them learn to relax and unload their stress. It would be an excellent resource for parents, teachers, pediatric nurses, and childcare providers.
Kids struggle with stress the same as adults do, there is so much pressure on them to perform and be at the top of their game daily. The games and techniques in this book are easy to play and can help kids calm down naturally and get themselves in a learning mode. The breathing techniques are a quick and easy way to feel better and they're great for grown-ups too! The meditation techniques help one learn to center and focus your attention where it needs to be in the moment. This is an awesome book!

Review :
Excellent resource for parents of teens with ADHD or ADD
As a clinical psychologist I regard this as one of the best resources for parents of teens. This helps parents to look at the teen with ADHD as having some executive skills impairments that need remediation and understanding. Parents also rate their own executive skills and can try to be a better fit in parenting these adolescents. There are many constructive suggestions in this book and I highly recommend it.

Great Book! Excellent insight into the struggles your teen may be facing.
Smart but Scattered Teens is a must for any proud parent of a teen coping with a learning disability. Unlike many similar books, it presents information and suggestions in a real-life, applicable manner. The authors present the material in an organized, readable, fashion, where a parent (or even a teen, for that matter) could read the book from cover to cover, or select individual sections most applicable to their situation.

The book also contains several hypothetical situations that many teens may find themselves in (think of speeding in a car). It then contains some interesting reactions, both from professionals and from real life teens, on how to respond, learn, and grow based on from such experiences.

Ultimately, if your teen could use a little, or a lot, of help developing the executive skills necessary to succeed in life, this book is for you.

A+

Excellent look at the unusual child
I have a kid who's gifted & in gifted classes. Understands high level concepts, but can't figure out how to organize his locker or manage to turn in his homework - even though he's completed it. It's been bandied about maybe he has autism or ADD, but those didn't fit. This book describes him to a T. Not having the frontal lobe of his brain maturing at the same rate as his peers is a simple, logical explanation & the ensuing ways to deal are enlightening & helpful. This book was a god-send. It was suggested by his gifted teacher after she spent time with him.

Being a teen or tween isn't easy for anyone -- but it's especially tough for Asperkids. I know. I was one, I taught a whole bunch, and I am going to be raising three! That's also why I know that Asperkdis deserve their very own guide to all of the hidden social rules that are awfully confusing to us, even if they seem obvious to everyone else. "The Asperkids' (Secret) Rule Book of Social Rules." This isn't your momma's Emily Post, and there is no "don't do this" finger-wagging or patronizing "high and mighty preaching" here. Instead, the "Secret" Book gives Asperkids (aged 10-17) respectful, funny insights written "for Aspies by an Aspie." Chock full of illustrations, logic and even a practice session or six (in comic strip style, thank you very much!), this is the handbook every adult Aspie wishes we'd had growing up, but never did.

Review :
Best "how to" book for an Aspie kid!
Of all the books about Asperger's that I own, this is the only one with "how to" information for the child. I bought this book a couple of months ago for my 11 year old son who has Asperger's. We read one chapter together each night and both learn from it. We even reference it when he comes home from school after a "bad day" and look up how he could have handled the situation differently. I would recommend this book to any one who has an asperger child in the pre-teen to tween age.

Great book not just for our Aspie kids, but any child with social struggles
At first glance, this book looks terrific for kids with Aspergers, but also for any kids, including gifted kids, who need a little help understanding the social expectations of life.

Here's what one parent of a gifted child who also struggles socially has to say...

"The Asperkid's Secret Book of Social Rules" is like the answer to my prayers. My son has not been diagnosed as Asperger's, and he lacks some key characteristics, but this book is EXACTLY the book I've wished existed for helping him navigate social situations, etc. It is direct, funny and easy to read and doesn't "sugar coat" the dynamics of tweens and teens. I am giving it to him this afternoon and will report back, but if you haven't seen this book and have a kid that struggles with how to "fit in" or exhibits behaviors that make you say "WHAT makes him think that was a good idea to do/say!?!" it's worth checking out!

Thanks to the parents of Hoagies' Gifted Education Page for this great...
A Book for Asperkid Teens, Tweens & honestly, Aspies & Caregivers of ALL ages!
I was honored to have the opportunity to read an advance copy of the book.

Not only is The Asperkid's Secret Book of Social Rules a book for Asperkid teens and tweens, it is also a book for their parents, caregivers and for anyone who grew up Aspie and wants to understand themselves and the world around them better. Being undiagnosed until in my 40s, this is the book I wish I had when I was a teenager. Thank you Jennifer, for not only making these social rules no longer 'secret' but for helping create a social survival guide that helps promote acceptance, enrichment, inspiration and empowerment for Asperkids everywhere!
