Love of Quilting
So-I am a subscriber to this magazine. When I signed up for it (back in february), they offered a free gift... (still don't know what that is yet..) Today I get this free DVD in the mail of patterns and such. I think 'oh this must be my free gift'... um. no. If you read the fine print, you have so many days to send it back if you don't want it or you'll be charged 13.95 (a savings of over 40%off the regular subscriber price!) Not impressed.

Five Stars
Terrific Magazine, great ideas, plans, etc!

Used to be one of the better ones, now too "modern" for me
I have recently noticed that my quilt mags are all looking the same these days. If one does a cheddar quilt, the others do as well. All have the same icky "modern" colorways in unsettling block layouts. All have the kits available and a certain sameness to the layouts. Have they all been bought by the same conglomerate???

Well, yes. FW Media now owns the MCCalls and Fons & Porter titles, and they have created a consistent look that is not appealing. Used to be we could count on F&P for scrappy traditional projects as well as more modern designs - now it's all modern all the time. Maybe the plan is to merge them all into one mag once they have wrung all the individuality out of them.

All that being said, there are so many very similar quilting mags out there so which gets our limited cash?

I used to go to the magazine stand and count the number of quilt patterns in the magazines that I'd consider making; the one with the highest number went home...

Cute but small!
Book is a lot smaller than expected. It's about the size of my palm as you can see in the picture. Cute idea though and I know my mom will love this for Mother's Day because we are super close.

Great Gift!
I bought this for my mom and I hope she really likes it. It was even fun for me to remember the past to think of things i wanted to fill the blanks with.

Wonderful gift (:
I gave this to my mother after we found out she has lupus. This little book made her day. It is tiny, but the size is nice since it easily fits in a purse.

This unique obcject provides exceeded own anticipation, this one has developed into a amazing buy for myself, The theory arrived safely along with swiftly Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love With Expectations and Protection With Trust

From award-winning author Ken Ginsburg comes this new work which explores an innovative idea in parenting: "The Lighthouse Parenting Strategy."
Dr. Ginsburg's previous work includes "Building Resilience in Children and Teens" which offers a comprehensive overview of strategies to build resilience and promote the kind of traits that lead to our children becoming happy, successful adults.  This book offers a deeper dive into two fundamental questions over which parents struggle: 1) How do I give my child the unconditional love he needs to thrive, while also holding him to high expectations? and 2) How do I protect my child while also letting her learn life's lessons?
"We should be like lighthouses for our children; beacons of light on a stable shoreline from which they can safely navigate the world.  We must make certain they don't crash against the rocks, but trust they have the capacity to learn to ride the waves on their own."
This book is rooted in proven concepts from the positive youth development and resilience frameworks and combines new research with expert opinion to help parents consider how to approach these toughest of questions.
This book is cowritten by Dr. Ginsburg's two teenaged daughters, Ilana and Talia Ginsburg, and perspectives from over 500 teens are also part of this groundbreaking work.

Review :
This book should be on every parents night stand
Anyone who knows me personally would tell you my kids are the most important things in the world to me. They know I Love them unconditionally and there is little in this world within reason that I wouldn't do for them. However, long before I read this book, I knew in certain situations I was falling short. Not necessarily failing them but I didn't have the proper tools to prepare them to be independent self reliant men. Many a night I would ponder over conversations we shared and wonder if I said or did the right thing. No parent wants to be a failure to their children. We all want the absolute best for them. Now, after reading: 'Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love with Expectations and Protection with Trust', I feel I have the tools I was lacking. I feel more confident in my parenting skills. A lot of things I did have right but a lot of things I didn't have a clue. This book is not necessarily a manual but a tool to assist parents in their goals. It's definitely a must-have book...
This book is a must read not just for parents, but for educators, mentors and anyone who works with young people.
The beauty of this book is its simplicity. Every parent has been conflicted about fostering independence while protecting their children at one time or another. Every parent worries about setting high expectations while showing unconditional love. Dr. Ginsberg masterfully guides us with practical advice given in digestible bites that make it easy to put his words to practice. What is most powerful about the book are the words of his children and the other young people who grace his pages.

Raising Kids to Thrive
Raising Kids to Thrive: Balancing Love With Expectations and Protection With Trust is a quick read filled with excellent child rearing advice. As a mother of four children, two of which are teens, I sometimes struggle with deciding when I should give my kids more freedom. My oldest is fourteen now, and she wants to go out with friends. I trust her, but I don't trust other people, and I know I can get overprotective at times. I know from my own personal experience growing up, that being too sheltered can cause more harm than good. When I left for college, I overwhelmed and terrified by the real world. I don't want my daughter to face those same issues. This book teaches parents how to find a balance between protection and trust.

The book also talks about expectations. As parents, we want what's best for our children, but there is a line. We can't live through our children or push them to do the things we wish we had done. The first half of the book teaches you to temper...

Hawaiian Puff-Wheels

My daughter loves finding these in her lunchbox. She says they are fancy and delicious. The variations are endless, so this one recipe can yield many happy lunchboxes for years to come.

Yield

4 or 5 servings.

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C), and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. On a lightly floured surface, unroll the pastry sheets. Spread the ham and pineapple evenly over both sheets. Sprinkle with the cheese. Carefully roll the dough, starting with the long side so that you end up with a long log. Cut the filled dough into 1-inch (2.5 cm) thick pieces, and place on the baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the dough rises and is golden. Remove from the oven, and allow the wheels to cool for 5 minutes prior to packing in a lunchbox. If you make these the night before, pack them chilled in the lunchbox. They will be room temperature by lunch.

Ingredients
  • 1 package (17 ounces, or 490 g) puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 3/4 cup (112 g) sliced deli ham, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup (80 g) crushed pineapple, well drained
  • 1 1/4 cups (145 g) shredded Cheddar cheese

Real Food, Real Fun, Real Easy
Laura Fuentes takes the hum drum out of school lunches with this book. There are no strange ingredients that you can't find at the grocery store. You don't have to have all those expensive kitchen tools and feel guilty if you don't cut your sandwiches into cute stars or anything. Using these recipes, lunch can be fun AND easy!

Everything is laid out in a clear, concise manner. There is a little intro telling you where the idea for each recipe originated, giving them a personal touch that I find appealing. At the end of the book, I was surprised to find a chart with the recipe names and a place for kids to rate each one. Pure. Genius. Now I can easily see which ones were favorites and we can mark whether we want to make it again or not. Getting the kids involved in planning lunches is SO KEY.

I am a homeschooling mom of 3, and I would get to a point in the day where I would stare at the refrigerator and say "what am I going to give these kids for...

Get Out the Door: Breakfast to Go – 11 Awesome Portable Morning Meals from Perfect Pancakes to Breakfast Burritos...
Looks awesome.. but I'm clueless on some things!
Got this book yesterday... and loving all the recipes I see! So excited to try them!

My only comment is that I would like to have seen a comment(1-3 sentences) per each recipe regarding instructions how to freeze/defost/pack (especially the sandwiches).

How do the avocados not turn brown and mushy after all morning in the lunchbox? How do the apple slices not turn brown? I'm really clueless about that stuff:)

Everything else look beautiful and wonderful! Looking forward to the next book!
